Should We Feed the Poor – take two!
Posted: March 8, 2011I don’t want to be rude, but DUH! Of course! But ~ we must do more than just feed and clothe those who find themselves without any resources. And for lasting results, we must begin with the children. Begin what, you ask? Teaching them the way out of the hopelessness and despair that fill their homes.
Next question! What should we teach these precious children? How to plant a garden, cook, and sew? Perhaps, someday. But more importantly, children need to know some life skills that will guide them through life, no matter the circumstances. The life skills I’m talking about begin with the most basic one of all ~ how to make choices!! All of life is about making right choices. That includes knowing right from wrong, who says so, and consequences. Many children live in poverty because their parents did not learn how to make right choices.
Other important life skill lessons are personal care, love matters, the value and use of money, how to be a kid with character, and understanding their personality & potential.
Ever looked for lessons that teach these life skills? I have. And until recently, there were none on the market – especially nothing created for at-risk and overlooked children in poverty. But I have good news – grace in ACTION usa has created a series titled “The LifeTime Learning Curriculum,” especially designed for kids who probably won’t learn these things at home.
The Hebrew proverb, “train up a child…” is true. But what if there’s no one to show that child the way he should go? What if drugs and alcohol rule that child’s home? What if the child has no idea who his parents are?
I’m just full of questions and a few answers too. So, stay tuned.
P.S. The last post should be dated March 1. I goofed!
